How to Reduce Food Waste at Home and Away from It.

Reducing food waste is a crucial step toward a more sustainable food system. Globally, roughly one‐third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted every year, generating significant environmental, economic, and social costs. Household food waste alone accounts for about $700 billion in environmental costs and, if reduced by just 25 percent, could potentially feed over 820 million undernourished individuals. Meanwhile, food service establishments—cafeterias, restaurants, and buffets—generate large amounts of plate waste, further exacerbating the problem. This post synthesizes evidence from peer-reviewed research to outline practical, research-based strategies for reducing food waste both at home and away from home.
