Veja - Good or Bad?

This week we are bringing you a shoes brand and a great one indeed.

Veja is a brand founded in Brazil in 2005 and now has factories in Brazil and Portugal.

They seem to be doing a great job at changing the way we see our shoes and circularity in general.

One of the biggest issues with sustainability is that a lot of people think it is a hoax and that it's not a sexy subject and Veja seem to be doing the exact opposite. They are making circularity they main business objective using various techniques.

First of all they use a large number of recycled and natural materials and they make sure that they are not only addressing environmental concerns but social ones too. They ensure that their workers gets paid fair wages and that their material contain what they say it does. They know their whole supply chain and understand what is involved in the production of their shoes.

Besides their good production ethos, they also ensure that post-consumer sustainability concerns are also addressed such as the disposal of shoes. They have started a return and repurpose scheme to give a second life to worned-out shoes. This is good as it removes waste from landfills but also sustains the shoe repair skills and shops that are disappearing due to our current way of consuming products.

After reading their website and the extensive amount of information on their, it seems that they are also striving for transparency and that is great - we love it!

Now, let's go to our list of pros and cons:

PROS:

  • Good Workers Rights

  • Transparent Supply Chain

  • B Corp Certified

  • Extensive use of natural and recycled materials

  • Developing circularity principles

CONS:

  • Quite expensive

  • For the price tag, the amount of natural materials could be higher per shoe.

All and all, we believe Veja is a great brand and they are going on the right path helping us move towards a more sustainable consumer world.
